Snow Daydream

Snow day! Few two word phrases can bring as much joy as “Snow day”; but unless you are a child (or a suburban school teacher) you are likely at your desk, gazing longingly out the nearest window, wishing you got that magical phone call this morning. How great would it be to be home in your most comfortable clothes, hanging out with friends and enjoying the unexpected respite? Well, we fantasized for you, and came up with a dream Snow Day scenario:

What are we playing? For old school fun, break out the Rummikub set- remember the joy of organizing your rack as you figure out your initial strategy, the excitement of seeing the tile you need discarded before your turn, and the euphoria of turning over the rack as you place your final series! If you want something with a bit more strategy, try Settlers of Canan. Develop settlements, acquire resources, trade goods; play it once and you will be hooked. This board game has won numerous awards, and has moved from the basements of geeks to the mainstream- it is reportedly the most popular game in the clubhouse of the Green Bay Packers!

What are we watching? Since you don’t have to go in to work, watch from afar with a binge of episodes of The Office. Watch seasons 3-5 to see the show hitting on all cylinders, especially the Michael Scott Paper Company episodes near the end of the fifth season. To see where it all began, you can also watch the UK version of the show, with the brilliant Ricky Gervais. To celebrate with the best day of hooky of all time, stream Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. For a fun drinking game, drink anytime Ferris looks at the camera, or anytime someone says “Bueller”.

What are we drinking? Well, if we referenced a drinking game, we need something to imbibe! First off, we recommend a Spiked Nutella Hot Chocolate. Simmer milk until it is warm, add 3 teaspoons of nutella, and stir until it combines. Once it is warm throughout, pour in a glass, stir in vodka (try a flavored vodka like toasted marshmallow or cinnamon) and top with whipped cream. Yum! Another favorite is a spiked cider– warm up a glass of apple cider, mix in some Southern Comfort, and top with some sprinkled cinnamon or a cinnamon stick.

What are we eating? Few meals are as simple and comforting as a great grilled cheese. Be sure to butter the bread before you place it in the skillet, and serve with a warm tomato soup- perfect for dipping! For desert? S’mores! Although you probably don’t have a fire handy, preheat the oven to 400 degrees, assemble the graham cracker, chocolate and marshmallow on a cookie sheet, and in 3-5 minutes you will have a perfect treat for your snow day!

It may be time to tell your boss that a “pipe burst” in your building, pick up some supplies, and make your own “Snow Day!”
